Riccarton Players Inc, is pleased to announce its first production of 2022, Becky Shaw, an amusing and cleverly crafted comedy about ambition, the cost of being truthful and the perils of a blind date, opening Wednesday 20th April for an exciting two week season!

When an evening calculated to bring happiness takes a dark turn, crisis and comedy ensue. Gina Gionfriddo’s comedy of bad manners, a tangled tale of love, sex and ethics among a quartet of men and women in their 30s, is as engrossing as it is ferociously funny. The character Becky Shaw is like a time bomb with a slow fuse, she is the nitro, thrown into the glycerine of a deeply co-dependent family.

The witty dialogue with zingers abounding, is worthy of comparison to a Philadelphia Story or Private Lives. Like the upstart Becky Sharp of Vanity Fair, this modern Becky is unsure, overdressed and socially ambitious. But watch out. She’s no shrinking violet, as the silkily cynical Max soon learns.

From their first blind date, which includes an unscheduled visit to the police station, these 30-somethings, along with the newlyweds who set them up, surprise us—and themselves—in a comedy thriller the New York Times called “as engrossing as it is ferociously funny, like a big box of fireworks fizzing and crackling across the stage!”.

This play asks what we owe the people we love the most and the strangers who land on our doorstep.

We look forward to seeing you there!
