Class Name: Care Through Use: Advancing Papermaking using native plants

Class Size: 12 (max number of students)

Class Description

In this one-day workshop gain knowledge of the properties of native plant fibres and learn how to make your own paper from scratch.

Following an introduction to basic paper making skills, participants have the opportunity to get their hands wet and experiment – making sheets, cards and letter writing stationery.

The workshop has a guided free-form style, interspersed with the theory and history of papermaking. Rob’s practice is informed by his environmental science background, which offers participants a layered perspective on this craft.

The workshop sheds light on technical processes including fibre extraction, pulping and beating, and post-production methods.

You’ll leave the workshop with knowledge of the technical aspects of preparing your own materials, and how to use simple appliances and commonly found plants. All paper products created on the day will be carefully dried, pressed, and posted to you in the week following the workshop.

Tutor: Rob Kennedy

With a background in environmental science and photography, Rob Kennedy has turned a passion for native ecological revegetation into a social enterprise business that contributes to the care of native plantings, while creating beautiful and unique paper. Native plant resources are sourced through partnerships with kairaranga and the traditional tikanga style approach of care-through use.

Rob views native plant papermaking as a “catalyst to engage people with environmental improvement through native plantings that can both provide the raw materials for cultural use and support the growth of biodiversity values”.

Being largely self-taught, Rob has been a papermaker since 2015 and enjoys the challenge of continuously improving his methods, developing his own equipment and optimising the papermaking process for quality, efficiency and resource use.
