In a tribute to Lydia Wevers (1950–2021).
In a tribute to Lydia, Carol Markwell – author of 'Enough Horizon: the Life and Work of Blanche Baughan' – introduces a woman ahead of her time. Blanche (1870–1958) was a poet, travel writer, environmentalist, and prison reformer.
Lydia Wevers became a crowd favourite at successive Featherston Booktown Karukatea Festivals telling spellbinding stories about once popular but now neglected or forgotten Aotearoa New Zealand writers. With her death, we are asking other writers to step in and tell these stories.
Carol Markwell, author of 'Enough Horizon: The Life and Work of Blanche Baughan', longlisted for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards this year, will speak about the life of a remarkable woman. Blanche, or BEB, as she was known, was an early New Zealand poet (friend to Ursula Bethell and Eileen Duggan), journalist and environmentalist, as well as an ardent campaigner for penal reform and social justice.
