Tiger Moth play Sumo Jazz is a truly nationwide affair, with four core members of the Christchurch based band (including co-founder of the Chch Jazz School – pianist Tom Rainey, trombonist extraordinaire Scott Taitoko, and virtuosic vocalist Kate Taylor) being complemented by Auckland musicians Richie Pickard on bass and Adam Tobeck on drums.
Their performance at CJC will cap off a whirlwind 48 hours which includes a trad jazz concert and a workshop at Auckland University. Ably led by tenor saxophonist Gwyn Reynolds, the CJC concert will feature NZ originals from the two albums recorded by Sumo Jazz, fantastic compositions by global musical heavyweights (including Joe Lovano, Dave Holland, Bill Stewart), and some captivating reimagined standards.
