The September edition of the Dunedin Jazz Club features the Latin sounds of internationally recognised jazz pianist Dan Costa (UK), who performs his original compositions on the grand piano at Hanover Hall in trio format with double bassist Umar Zakaria (Wellington) and drummer Carl Woodward. Costa is one of the world’s leading jazz pianists and this is indeed a rare treat for such a high calibre musician to be performing in Dunedin!

Praised for melodic sensibility by DownBeat Magazine, Dan Costa is a jazz/ world music pianist, composer and producer who has collaborated with artists such as Randy Brecker, Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro, Seamus Blake, Jaques Morelenbaum and Roberto Menescal. He released his first album Suite Três Rios in 2016, considered one of the best albums of the year by Down Beat Magazine. His second album Skyness was deemed "rare and luxurious" by All About Jazz, while Live in California, his solo piano album released in 2020 was praised for "profound expression" by Jazziz Magazine. He also recorded two singles - the well-known standard Love Dance with one of its creators, Ivan Lins, and Iremia, with Randy Brecker, as a message of peace.

As evidenced by his 2020 release, Live in California, Costa is a virtuoso jazz pianist comfortable performing as both solo pianist or band leader. These recent live recordings register Dan’s early training as a classical pianist in France, his study of jazz and contemporary piano styles at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and his study of Latin music at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo in Portugal. Although Dan has developed his own blend of jazz and world music, the influence of giants such as Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea can be heard in his work, with left hand vamps driving his compositions and crystalline melodic lines soaring above these insistent rhythms. Dan is soon to release a new album recorded in New York with Dave Liebman, John Patitucci and other musicians.

For this special concert, Costa brings with him renowned double bassist Umar Zakaria, who has risen to prominence as one of NZ’s leading double bassist and composers, being a featured artist at the Wellington Jazz Festival in 2021 and the former winner of a TUI for Best Jazz Artist. Dunedin audiences will be familiar with Umar from his performance with George MacLaurin last year at the DJC and will no doubt be intrigued to hear him interacting with Costa and Carl Woodward on the drums, who also brings a vast amount of jazz and Latin music to the mix.
