EDEN -The Inside Story. A film presentation by Robin Kewell

Film-maker Robin Kewell was given access to every aspect of the Eden project from when it was a seed of an idea right through to when the project opened to the public in 2001, when it earned the title ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ Over 3,500 hours of footage has been edited down to tell the story of how it all happened. This is a 'warts and all' film, showing the roller-coaster ride, the ups and downs of finances, how they build the World’s biggest greenhouses in a disused claypit during the wettest winter in 100 years, finding the thousands of plants and trees to fill them and the constant search for funding.

This special screening is to raise awareness in the community about the 'BACK the BLOOMS on BASTIA' project to save The Bell's family nursery on Bastia Hill which holds one of New Zealand's most important horticultural histories. This forgotten garden not only has a collection of rare plants but has a rare history to go with them. Robin will be making comparisons to the world famous 'Lost Gardens of Heligan' in Cornwall (UK) Those gardens were discovered by ex-rock musician Tim Smit in 1990, he found a tangle of brambles and weeds in a garden that had been neglected since World War One. Restoring the Heligan gardens took ten years, it was the biggest gardening restoration in the history of Europe, the gardens opened to the public, who now come in their thousands every year, to experience this 400 year old family home garden. Heligan was where Tim and a small team came up with the idea for the Eden project. So if you want to see how a dream can become a reality come to this special film evening.

Robin will hold a Q & A after the screening and there will be a chance to find out more about the 'lost gardens of Whanganui'
