Do you believe in aliens? Three quirky documentaries about UFO encounters offer some unusual and unexpected answers to that question.

A 72-year-old man claims to have lost his virginity to an extra-terrestrial; an entire TV crew witnesses New Zealand’s most famous UFO incident; and a retired Special Agent reveals a saucer-shaped hall of mirrors where every lie contains elements of the truth.

Presented in conjunction with The Truth Is Out There exhibition at The Dowse Art Museum, this hand-picked line up of documentaries offers something a bit different for UFO believers, sceptics, and everyone in between.

Ticket grants access to all three films, come to one or all three. Snacks will be available from our on-site candy bar.

Programme

2pm – The Kaikoura UFOs (2009) NR Directed by Paul Davidson
On the night of 30 December 1978, Argosy aircraft ZK-SAE, with two pilots and a three-person television crew on board, was followed down the Kaikoura coast by a group of fast-moving and unexplained lights. At the same time, the objects were being tracked by ground radar stations and the radar on the aircraft. The lights were also filmed by the professional cameraman aboard the aircraft, while the reporter provided a live-running commentary.

These events caused a worldwide media sensation and sparked official Governmental and scientific inquiries – but the ‘Kaikoura UFOs’ remain one of the most intriguing UFO encounters of all time.

3pm | Mirage Men (2014) NR Directed by John Lundberg
Mirage Men takes you on a journey through the badlands and backwaters of America. Based on their best-selling book, Mark Pilkington and John Lundberg uncover a 60-year-old story stranger than any conspiracy thriller. For over sixty years, teams within the US Air Force and US intelligence services exploited and manipulated beliefs about UFOs and extra-terrestrial visits as part of their counter-intelligence programs. In doing so they spawned a mythology so powerful that it captivated and warped many brilliant minds, including several of their own. Now for the first time, some of those behind these operations and their victims speak out, revealing a true story that is part Manchurian Candidate and part Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

4.30pm | Love & Saucers – The Far Out World of David Huggins (2017) PG Directed by Brad Abrahams
Love & Saucers is the strange story of David Huggins, an unassuming 72-year-old who claims to have had a lifetime of encounters with otherworldly beings - including an interspecies romance with an extra-terrestrial woman. Chronicled in his surreal impressionist paintings, few of which have ever been seen, Love & Saucers is an intimate, non-judgemental portrait of an entirely ordinary man and his accounts of extraordinary events.
