This Furoshiki Workshop is the first up in The Incubator’s Waste Free Christmas Series.

Furoshiki 風呂敷 are traditional Japanese wrapping cloths traditionally used to wrap and/or to transport goods.

In this workshop you’ll learn the art of waste free wrapping to make your Christmas gifts both memorable and sustainable! You’ll learn how to measure, cut, fold and tie three different sizes and take them home to use as templates and to wrap all your Christmas gifts this year, saving all that paper and tape from the landfill and encouraging your friends and family to give it a go too.

Fabrics supplied. Participants must bring a wine sized bottle, box and book to wrap.

Furoshiki is itself, the gift that keeps on giving as you can use it throughout the year – not only for presents but for storing and carrying anything from bottles and picture frames to boxes and even plants and hats. Once your furoshiki have served their purpose, just wash them and/or fold them up and put them away until they’re needed again!

From Miki – ‘I am originally from Toyohashi, Japan. Since I was a child, furoshiki was always in our life. My grandmother always used furoshiki for wrappings or carrying something. Since I came to NZ, I wasn’t using furoshiki much. But when plastic bags disappeared, I started using furoshiki more and more. I always have one or two furoshiki in my car.’
