The Ghost Train is a stage comedy-thriller, written in 1923 by English actor and playwright Arnold Ridley. Ridley is well known for playing Private Godfrey in the British TV sitcom Dad’s Army.
The play takes place in the waiting room of a small branch railway station in Cornwall. It centres upon a disparate group of passengers who have been stranded overnight. The station master tries to persuade them to leave the site as he wants to lock up for the night. He also warns them of the danger of a spectral passenger train that sometimes haunts the line at night, bringing death to all who set eyes upon it.
Over three acts, the play explores the interaction of the passengers, who doggedly refuse to leave. The tension mounts as the threat of the spectral train's appearance become ever more real.
