A Māori girl, with a Māori name, in a New Zealand School.

Presented by Kāpiti College, Hineraukatauri is a play about a Māori girl starting her education at a mainstream secondary school. On her first day, Hineraukatauri encounters a teacher that refuses to call her by her real name because it’s too difficult to pronounce, and instead asks if she can call her by her middle name, Katrina. This causes major conflict between the two. Hineraukatauri is on a journey to reclaim her identity, where the teacher Betty Campbell fights against change until she has an epiphany.

Kāpiti College once again combines the talents of many students to present this new work. The mediums of drama, kapa haka, music, dance and poetry are used to tell this relatable story to thousands of people with Māori names in our country.
