In Greenwoods Corner there’s a café brimming with history: a special ‘sense of place’ for Tony Batistich that led him to tell its story and its part in the web of its neighbourhood’s growth and change. Not in a book, however, but by using a coaster, a QRCode and a StoryMap. Auckland Libraries’ collection of photographs is integral to this, imparting graphic histories and prompting us to look more deeply into what they depict. By combining images, biographies, documents, interactive maps the story breathes life.

About the speaker
What do you do when you’ve taught geography for 18 years, then been a geospatial analyst, cartographer, project and team manager in the next 18 years—and then retire? Tony found his reinvented niche as a heritage geographer through a simple request from Remuera Heritage to map the changes in the shopping centre. Five years later he is still searching out innovative ways to tell the stories of our early Memory Makers and to make them available. His interest lies in online StoryMaps, ways of keeping history alive and updated in the cloud.
