Hono is the inaugural exhibition at Season, a new gallery in downtown Tāmaki Makaurau. The term ‘hono’ suggests coming together, connection, and linking—ideas that are appropriate to the gallery as a whole. The show comprises work by Neke Moa (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and Jade Townsend (Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Ātihaunui-a-Pāpārangi). Both artists explore concepts of cultural identity, place, and unity, enacting their individual strategies for restoring spiritual connections to te ao Māori. Moa turns materials gathered from Ōtaki Beach—materials given to her by Tangaroa—into some of the most significant and powerful atua. Townsend’s ‘veils’ are cultural translations. They move between painting and textile, subject and object, the multiple and the unified.
