We are excited to be running three tours over the long weekend.
Each tour is $10 per person (children under 12 free), places must be booked by emailing friendsofkaroricemeterytours@gmail.com.
Sunday 5 June 10:30am - Off the Beaten Track
Stretch your legs on this tour. Off the Beaten Track takes you off the main road, exploring a bit further into the older sections of Karori Cemetery. We walk up and down the hills, through the gully’s and alongside the creek to discover some interesting characters and some of the history of the cemetery as well. Stories of professional stage magicians, murders & murder victims, soldiers, skylarkers, movies and gum trees are recounted.
This tour requires moderate fitness and is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.
Monday 6 June 10:30am Murder and Mayhem
Karori Cemetery is the final resting place for people whose lives ended tragically – from drowning, from murder, and from accidents of all kinds. This tour includes the story of three militia men killed in a guncotton explosion; an attempted murder followed by suicide; a drowning or two plus other exciting stories.
Monday 1:30pm Tales from the Vaults.
Find out who is in and who is out of some of the cemetery’s most substantial dwellings. Note: tours do not enter vaults or try them out for size.
This tour is suitable for people with moderate fitness.
