Being creative is fun and doing creative things makes us feel good.
This is a class is both challenging and freeing if you are open to it. We are in it for the process and the journey – it not focused on the end product.
It’s not analytical or critical. We laugh, we forget our mundane routines, we let go and get lost in the moment.
As a result we do some great drawings too!!
Based on the teaching methods of Cecil Collins, a British artist who challenged his students to work from a place of mindfulness focusing on energy, rhythms, masculine, and feminine marks.
Ralph Hotere studied under Cecil during his time in London. His figure drawings exemplify Cecil’s non analytical approach to drawing.
This course follows Cecil’s teaching techniques as I was taught by one if his students while living in London. We will use media often associated with Chinese brushwork, employing both hands, the mouth and the foot and often working at speed to eliminate the tendency to anticipate the outcome.

South Coast Studio offers a variety of art-based workshops. This term we are offering Watercolours, Drawing Fundamentals, Art History, 2D to 3D and Life Drawing.
Prior experience is not required. Our classes are for everyone with an open mind, a positive attitude, and a willingness to laugh a little while learning.
Located on Wellington’s stunning south coast overlooking Cook Strait, our studio accommodates up to 12 people per session so it’s a social but not crowded affair.
We also host exhibitions, and our studio is available for private events and self-run workshops.
