Auckland Primary Health Organisation (PHO) provides free education and support programmes for people with type-2 diabetes (or who are prediabetic) through the "Living Well With Diabetes interactive workshop".
Diabetes is a long-term condition. So, it's important we take the right steps over the things we can control (such as lifestyle habits) to help manage type-2 diabetes.
Our workshops are a great opportunity to build knowledge, get questions answered, get motivated and connect with other people who have diabetes. The nature of our workshops is intended to be collaborative, conversational, and interactive.
Our trained facilitators are from a range of health professional backgrounds and come from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Topics we discuss during the workshop:
- What is Type 2 Diabetes?
- The Self-Manager Mindset
- Healthy Eating
- What "balance" looks like
- Portion Sizing (plate model)
- Food Labelling
- Food Tips and Practical Ideas
- Physical Activity
- How to prevent the effects of diabetes on the rest of the body (heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, feet)
- Medications – How do they work?
- Blood tests- What do they mean?
- The effect stress has on diabetes
- Realistic goal setting
Morning tea, lunch and beverages are provided on the day. All whānau are welcome - we highly encourage this!
