Manawatu Gorge Excursion – Afternoon

Travel with us by rail from Palmerston North through the Manawatu Gorge to Woodville. This is a diesel hauled excursion on 21st August 2022.

Sit back and relax in comfort departing Palmerston North as we cruise through the countryside towards Woodville. Since the Gorge section of SH3 was closed in 2017, travelling by rail is the only way to admire this magnificent scenery. Entering the Manawatu Gorge we will pass through the construction site of the Gorge replacement road: The Manawatu Tararua Highway. As we wind our way along the Manawatu River you will be able to see what was once one of the busiest roads in the region now being reclaimed by nature.

Upon arriving at Woodville you will have time to admire the restoration progress of the Woodville Railway Station. Before our homeward journey begins the entire train will be turned around on the Woodville balloon loop, ensuring you have a Gorge side view one way.
