A humourous historical account of the woman who brought the honey bee to New Zealand.

‘Mary Bumby’s Hive of Story’ is an interactive storytelling theatre piece which explores not only Mary’s life but the life of the honey bee and its long and fascinating history with humans. Storytelling for adults!

Suitable for open minded types aged 12 and up with a valid vaccine pass!

On March 19th, 1839, the very first honey bees, Apis Mellifera, arrived on the shores of Aotearoa. Mary Anna Bumby is the fanciful name of the person who brought the two straw skeps of bees from England. She was the host at the largest signing of the Tiriti o Waitangi, at Māngungu Mission, Hokianga.

Internationally renowned storyteller Tanya Batt was fascinated by the little-known tale of one of the most influential characters of modern agriculture. A novice beekeeper herself, Tanya Batt created a storytelling performance to celebrate the 180th anniversary of Mary (and the bees') arrival.

Mary Bumby's Hive of Story involves a prophecy and plenty of cross pollination: It's a highly interactive and humorous excursion into a world where Apis Mellifera and New Zealand’s past and future meet to make something sticky and sweet.

Tanya Batt will be accompanied by her musical partner and long-time collaborator Peter Forster for these performance.

If weather permits, the performance will take place outdoors (bring warm layers or a blanket for your knees). In the event of rain, extreme cold or high wind, the performance will be indoors.

Tickets must be booked in advance (no door sales).

If you want to explore the Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House visitor experience prior to the performance, admission charges will apply. Allow a minimum of 45 minutes (booking recommended).
