Join us for this amazing one-day jewellery workshop!

2022 is the first year Matariki is honoured as a special public holiday in Aotearoa. We are celebrating with 3 full-day creative workshops run concurrently in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Te Whanganui-a-tara Wellington and Te Papa-i-Oea Palmerston North.

The appearance of Matariki (aka the star cluster Pleiades) heralds a time of remembrance, joy and peace. It is a time for communities to come together and celebrate the past as well as the year to come, to acknowledge our whakapapa (genealogy) and make new wishes for the coming year.

Our star-inspired Matariki workshops will suit both beginners and advanced students. Beginners will start with texturing and cutting to create pendants or earrings, then explore design options for their silver project. Advanced students can bring design ideas along to discuss with their tutors.

At lunchtime and the end of the workshop, we will connect with jewellery-making students at the other centres via Zoom to share our creative Matariki journeys, show our work and celebrate together!

All students are encouraged to bring ideas and materials that inspire them and speak of Matariki.

Included in the course fee are practice metals (copper and brass), 8 grams of sterling silver and some traditional materials such as locally sourced muka (flax fibre) for hanging pendants.

Kids over the age of 12 (or so) are welcome in the class, but any person aged1. 16 or under must be accompanied by an enrolled parent or caregiver.
