Part of Matariki Festival Events 2022

The Department of Conservation teams up with Forest and Bird for two new and unique presentations bonded by a common theme. Tupu-ā-rangi, a star in the Matariki cluster used to foresee the likely abundance of birds, seeds and fruit from trees.

Talk one 'Karanga manu' Kokako dialect
Nataalia Hemaima Lunson (Whakatōhea, Maniapoto, Tuwharetoa) Community Ranger for the Department of Conservation uses advocacy science to reach a broader audience to encourage the protection of our native birds. This presentation touches on the value of natural history, indigenous knowledge, ornithology, anthropology and musicology for the protection and recovery of the Kokako.

Talk two 'Ngahere' - A look into the future of Indigenous forests with climate change.
Guest Speaker - Darren Van Hoof (Ngāti Whare, Tūhoe) Conservation Manager for Forest and Bird, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. "The ngahere provides so many benefits to us as a society and as individuals. Climate change is at the forefront of all societies so how can we use our heavenly treasures to limit and prevent this." This korero will look at the future of indigenous forest in providing a major solution to climate change. This complex topic will be discussed including eco sourcing, genetic diversity and planting of natives for harvest.
