Extend the life of your clothes by mending holes, rips and tears in your woven garments, and fixing ladders in your knit garments. Recycle new or old fabrics by incorporating them into your mending (where appropriate). Use your sewing machine to its full advantage and develop a sustainable approach to your wardrobe thus avoiding adding to the landfill!

We all have garments in our wardrobes that we no longer wear but cannot bear to throw out or give away, so let’s do something about that and learn how to turn them back into a desirable wearable garment. Bring your garments to class and we will identify what is mendable, the best techniques to use and how to reinforce areas prior to mending. Think sustainably and look to incorporate recycled fabrics into the mend and let’s wear our mended clothes with pride!

Please bring a couple of garments that you'd like to mend, an assortment of fabric scraps to be used for mending, some fusible interfacing and your sewing kit [sewing thread, pins, tape measure, fabric scissors, hand sewing needles and something to mark your fabric (i.e. chalk or fabric marking pencil0].

Tea and coffee is provided for your breaks, but please bring your lunch/snacks. You'll also need a pen and paper to take notes.

If you will be mending on the sewing machine you are welcome to bring your own along with its foot pedal/cords and accessory box. If you plan on using the school sewing machines you will need to have a Bernina bobbin which can be purchased from the CEC office on the day of the course for $5.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

Assess garments that have potential to be mended
Recognise sewing methods that can be applied to garments to mend it so that it will become a desirable item in your wardrobe again.
Identify feasible and suitable techniques and fabrics that be applied to mend garments

Prerequisites
For people with previous sewing experience and understanding of sewing terminology.

Note: Courses need a minimum number to go ahead so if we don't have enough enrolments a few days before the start date, we have to cancel. We'll let you know by email so please check yours regularly. If you need to cancel your registration, here are our terms and conditions: "What You Need to Know".
