In the piano repertoire there are a great many works inspired by dancing. Composers have been captivated by the spirit of dance, especially in its romantic and intimate guises. Except for the Bach Prelude and the Chopin Nocturne and Prelude all the music on today’s programme is dance music - and most of it in triple time - yet none of it was written to actually be danced to. The waltz in particular has generated marvellous piano music, its seductive swirl on full display in the works of Chopin and Ravel, and also its nostalgic sweetness in the hands of Gao Ping. The Pavane is a funerary dance and so even mourning can move our feet. Bach’s dance suites make up a large proportion of his secular music. However, you look at it this music is a celebration of movement and as such a celebration of life.
