Mozart's masterful 'Requiem' is a favourite choral work and one of the most frequently performed treasures from the classical repertoire. The companion work on the programme will be the American contemporary composer Dan Forrest’s 'the breath of life'. It is an evocative reflection on the beauty and joy of new life juxtaposed with the pain of loss.
Together these two works form an exquisite interpretation of the beginning and end of life. Joy and hope at birth contrast with deeply felt mourning of death. Both composers, one of the 18th, and the other of the 21st century succeed in providing an uplifting experience ending in optimism and the peace of perfect consolation.
Conductor: David Burchell
Soloists: Caroline Burchell, Claire Barton, Scott Bezett and Edward Smith
Accompanied by Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, with Valerie Xiang (organ) and Sandra Crawshaw (piano)
