Discover and celebrate New Zealand’s only native botanic garden at Ōtari Open Day!
Get to know our unique collections of native plants, and learn more about what goes on behind the scenes. We'll have guided tours, interesting talks, weaving and rongoā, puppet show, and hands-on activities.
GUIDED TOURS:
Take a tour of the only public botanic garden dedicated to native plants in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Hear about the vision of Leonard Cockayne and how curators have realised this vision over almost 100 years by bringing plants from all over the motu together for the beautiful public display you can see today. A great opportunity to see behind the scenes in the nursery where we have some very rare and unusual plants, and peer into the newly expanded Lions Ōtari Plant Conservation Laboratory where staff are doing cutting edge work to save some of the countries most threatened plants. There will be free plants available to participants at the end of the tour.
Pre register through the ticket link. You'll need to check in 5min before the tour starts to confirm your place. There will also be limited spots available on the day.

11am | The ferns of Aotearoa New Zealand and how to learn them

12pm | Trying to build the airplane while flying it
Presenter: James Willcocks (Project Director at Predator Free Wellington)
1pm | Restoring Wellington’s wild side
Presenter: Paul Ward (Founder, Project lead of Capital Kiwi)
PUPPET SHOW:
11:30am | The Tree Friends by String Bean Puppets
Kereru and Millie are best friends. When a baby Kohekohe tree is left orphaned in a storm they work together to protect him from the invaders.
An interactive puppet show for all ages about the struggle against invasive weed species.
Not all Green is Good!
This show was made in collaboration with Wellington City Council in 2018 to raise awareness about invasive weed species.
