Te Puna Aroha presents, Toi Iho Raranga/Whatu Artist Medina Koni, in two workshops this July. At the workshop you will get to make: a small taonga, a plaited limited edition bookmark and watch as Medina demonstrates how to create a piece of muka, aho, whenu, kārure tassel and get to listen to her 30 year weaving korero throughout the wananga. Spaces are limited to 20 per session.
These workshops are an extension of "Kua Puawai - The Blossoming & Fulfilment of my Raranga/Whatu journey", an Art Exhibition that showcases the dedication of Medina Koni's 30 year hikoi to master the art of raranga/whatu.
Through Medina’s eyes we capture a glimpse of old customary techniques woven into both traditional and modern contemporary designs through the lens of Te Ao Māori.
Beautifully handcrafted pieces from a full muka korowai, kahu kuta, kahu piu, kiwi feather neck dress, muka jewellery set, a delicate kete muka embellished with kārure to her first ever collaborative piece with graffiti artist son Taru-Belgium Hedger. Each item tastefully displayed in custom made boxed frames to allow for intimate viewing.
Medina Koni, (nee Hauraki) is fully Ngāti Hao/Te Popoto as well as Ngāti Hau/Ngāti Kaharau and Ngāpuhi nui tonu tūturu. Medina was born and raised in Te Tai Tokerau and is an official Toi Iho Artist.
