Symonds Street Cemetery was in use as a cemetery since the very early days of Auckland and was the major Pakeha cemetery in Auckland until at least the end of the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, there are also at least seventy Maori buried in different parts of the cemetery. Closed to new plots from 1886, in favour of the new Waikumete Cemetery, the last burial in Symonds Street Cemetery was in the early 1950s. This two hour tour will take you through the Jewish, Presbyterian, Catholic, Anglican and General-Wesleyan sections of the cemetery, where between 10,000 and 15,000 remains are still buried.
David Verran has led tours of Symonds Street Cemetery since the early 2000s and compiled the cemetery's burial database on the Auckland Libraries' website. He also managed the Central Auckland Research Centre at Auckland Central Library from 1990 to 2017.
