Kate Sheppard was the first President of the National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ), founded in Christchurch in 1896 to activate suffragists’ aspirations for women’s political influence and wellbeing.
NCWNZ is an umbrella organisation for women, working for girls, women and families with a strong focus on input into government policy and legislative changes.
Rosemary will share details of recent action directed at gender equality, women’s economic independence, and their visibility and political influence at local, national and international levels.
Since 2017, NCWNZ has spearheaded the Gender Equal campaign and is currently engaged in organisational change directed at Te Tiriti Waitangi partnership, better use of digital communication, and effective collaboration with affiliated organisations to end gendered violence, address historic pay inequalities and facilitate participation by women in a range of issues confronting our planet.
Rosemary Du Plessis is currently President of the Ōtautahi Christchurch branch of NCWNZ. She was research coordinator for the NCWNZ Christchurch Branch Women’s Voices/Ngā Reo o Ngā Wāhine project that recorded women’s experiences of the Christchurch earthquakes. Rosemary was one of the founders of the Feminist Studies (later Gender Studies) programme at University of Canterbury and was engaged in women/gender-focused research, publication and teaching for many years.
Tickets must be booked in advance (no door sales).
If you want to explore the Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House visitor experience after the talk, admission charges apply.
This event is proudly brought to you by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, in partnership with the National Council of Women of New Zealand, to celebrate International Women's Day (Tuesday 8 March 2022).
