The studio system was dead. Independent film was spreadng its fledgling wings. Companies and corporations were vying for a piece of Hollywood pie, and Quaker Oats had their eyes set on a documentary filmmaker and his dramatic adaptation of a Roald Dahl blockbuster book.
This isn't the beginning and its definitely not the end of the story of what's now an undeniable childhood classic, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971). The story of its creation and reception is as strange as the film itself, and it typcial cinematheque fashion, the film was a flop upon release. Who'd have thought...
We're doing our proper cinematheque programme on the 24th at 6pm, but a matinee will be put on at 2pm that same day. Then we're trying something new - a BYO Baby show for families who want to bring their little ones but hate the idea of disturbing audience members. This show is for you! BYOBaby will be 10:30am on Tuesday the 26th.
