Kia hiwa ra! Kia hiwa ra! Nau mai haere mai! Come and join us for Te Pō Kitakita, a Matariki Celebration at The Arts Village! Live music, art activities for the whole whanau, and learn about Matariki.
This event will be held on Thursday 23rd of June at The Arts Village from 5:30pm- 8:30pm. Throughout the evening we will have live music, free tamariki/whānau art activities that the whole family can enjoy and an opportunity for us to share our Matariki knowledge.
Our Matariki exhibition, Under the Stars, will also be on in the Wallis Gallery to view throughout the night. Our on site cafe, Hello Stranger on Hinemaru, will be open for hot chocolates, coffee and kai!
Matariki, this year celebrated on the 24 June, is the nationally recognised Māori New Year. It is also the name of a cluster of stars, known in European tradition as the Pleiades. According to legend, the stars are the eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea, who threw them to the sky in anger after seeing his brothers separate their parents, Papatūānuku and Ranginui.
