The Circle of the Family - Art Exhibition

THE CIRCLE OF THE FAMILY – Sue Mac Dougall
The inspiration behind this body of work comes from my Greek family that I was once married into. Even after my divorce, the family unit was retained - in particular for my two sons.
I began to reflect on the connection that the Greek women have together and the parallels with life in New Zealand.
Afternoons talking about family problems or health issues, advice given and received, domestic crafts produced, the latest cooking recipes presented - bringing along a plate or two to share with each other.
Gossip is high on these afternoons too, but above all they supported each other with love, care and kindness.
With that in mind I took the embroidery hoops which some of them used and added my own personal photographed images and memories that I had brought back with me. Encaustic wax, gold leaf embellishments and resin were then used to enhance and celebrate aspects of carefully chosen imagery.
The resulting artworks began to represent the circle of life and the imparting of knowledge, storytelling and family history these special women gifted to me.

The works can be separated and hung singularly or in groups, where new stories can be told and retold depending on the selection and order – where the purchaser can begin to bring their own personal experiences to them.

Opening preview Saturday the 26th November gather at 10am opening at 10.30am in the Incubator lounge. Everyone welcome.

On display in The Incubator Gallery from Monday 28th November until 19th December. Open 9am-4:30pm weekdays and 10am-2pm Saturdays.
