In 1867, men from all over the world rushed to The Thames to try their luck in the new goldfield. They spread out all over the steep bush-covered ranges and gullies and soon came to realise that the gold at Thames was tied up in the quartz rock which they saw jutting out from the ground. This talk will be about where they found the gold, how they found it, along with outlining all the difficulties they encountered when trying to turn the quartz rock into a gold bar that they could cash in at the bank.
About the speaker
Kae Lewis is the owner of the popular website GOLDRUSH ONLINE (www.kaelewis.com). She has a special interest in the early goldrushes, the goldminers who flocked to them, and the techniques they used to extract the gold. And recently published a major book entitled “Goldrush To The Thames, NZ, 1867 – 1869”. Before retirement, she was a biochemist, graduating D.Phil. from the University of Waikato and worked in medical research and I.V.F., both in New Zealand and overseas. She originally graduated BSc in Chemistry from the University of Canterbury, leading to a lifetime interest in the chemistry of gold and the history of the worldwide goldrushes 1850 – 1890s.
