The New Horizon Variety Show… One of Hibiscus Coast’s Most Popular Family Annual Events
Due to popular demand and now in its 5th year, the very entertaining New Horizon Variety Show aims at supporting all that is good about life – love, family, values, fun, sharing, trust etc.

Featuring international entertainers Gray Bartlett and Ronnie Antonio along with our own local talent such as Nick Jones and The New Horizon Band, the show always promises fun, laughter and great live easy listening music.

By popular demand, there will be 2 shows this year and proceeds will again go to The Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre (HBCYC) an organisation supporting youth with problems throughout the region.

Here is one of their stories:

A life of many lessons has brought Mary (not her real name) to become the person she is today, a woman of strength and spirit. At a young age of 4, both her parents were classified ‘unfit’ for parenting. She and her younger sister were taken in by different families and the girls drifted from one end of New Zealand to the other. At the age of 14 she was abandoned by the system and became homeless.

An Aunty took in her sister, as she was younger and would have been placed in care. Mary had spent most of her life protecting her sister and the bond between them was something special. Once apart from her sister, Mary became wayward and slipped into a state of deep depression. She found school stressful as education was the last thing on her mind and many teachers had no clue what was happening in her life. She recalls many times as the 3pm bell would ring, breaking down thinking about where she was going to stay that night. This lead to a suicide attempt. This was a serious attempt and one from which doctors said she would not recover. But she did.

She now believes she is here for a reason and works tirelessly to minimise youth feeling as she did, working towards helping youth on a larger scale one day. She thanks the team at The Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre, Dan Brady in particular, for not only being the first there but for being so important in her recovery and the return of her self esteem and purpose in life.

She is currently studying for level 5 Youth Work Certificate.
Apparently she’s not a bad rugby player either……maybe the Black Ferns next ?
