Thirty Years of HUIA: CANCELLED

Since 1991, HUIA has published books that explore the perspectives, stories and knowledge of Māori from across Aotearoa. Through their work as an independent publisher, HUIA has opened a window into the rich and generative world of Māori literature and has spearheaded a flourishing educational and general indigenous publishing in Aotearoa. HUIA co-founder Robyn Rangihuia Bargh and current HUIA directors Brian Morris and Eboni Waitere look back at the story of HUIA and share the vision for HUIA’s future, with host Māni Dunlop.

Eboni Waitere | Aotearoa / New Zealand

Eboni Waitere (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne) managers the commercial publishing programme. Huia Publishers is an award winning and internationally recognised publisher that continues to discover new writers and attract established authors. HUIA is a major sponsor of the Māori Literature Trust. As part of the support, HUIA delivers writers' workshops, mentoring programmes and biennial writers' awards. Eboni leads these programmes. Being a graduate of Kōhanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa Māori, Eboni has first-hand experience of Māori medium education. She uses this knowledge in her oversight of the range of print and digital resources that HUIA develops for Māori. Having solid governance experience has also led to Eboni chairing a number of business and community boards and trusts.

Brian Morris | Aotearoa / New Zealand

Brian Morris (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongowhakaata) is always prepared with an intriguing tale to tell, Brian has been part of the HUIA team for almost 20 years. In 2014, Brian transitioned from managing the HUIA Education team into the role of an Executive Director and owner of HUIA. Brian remains an integral leader of the services team for educational publishing and is a licensed Māori language translator. He has authored a number of books in Māori and has also translated a number well-known children’s books into te reo Māori language.

Māni Dunlop | Aotearoa / New Zealand

Māni Dunlop, he uri o Ngāpuhi, has been with RNZ for almost a decade. She joined RNZ as an intern in 2011, starting in the general newsroom and specialising in housing and social issues.

Māni then moved into RNZ’s newly established Māori news unit, Te Manu Kōrihi, and became Māori News Director in 2019. She has covered a range of stories and significant events in both te ao Māori and in Aotearoa.

She lives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington, with her daughter – Pikiarero.
