Not a coming out, but a becoming of…
A story shared as an amalgamation of faith, spirituality, Samoan culture and indigenous queer identity ‘Not a coming out, but a becoming of’ is an embodiment of Tauatāne using Siva Samoa and fāgogo.
In post-modern times Tauatāne can be translated to homosexuality or a species of sodomy, however, in pre-contact Samoa it is referred to a ‘male standing dance of an unknown nature’ having precious and warrior connotations. This work navigates this intersectionality and conflict as reflections within my identity and journey in Aotearoa as a New Zealand born Samoan, Christian, and Queer person. It leans into themes of indigenous and theological reaffirmation, and a sense of belonging and healthy co-existence between the three communities I am a part of.
‘Not a coming out, but a becoming of’ asks... is it possible to co-exist in these communities, despite the natural conflict... to courageously and unapologetically express my authentic self through dance.... and to shine a light on triple-minoritized communities who suffer from not knowing where their senses of belonging are within a theological, cultural, spiritual and societal settings.
