One hundred years ago this year, 'Ulysses' by James Joyce was published by Miss Sylvia Beach, a young American of modest means but brave ambitions, who had recently opened the bookshop Shakespeare and Company on the Left Bank in Paris.
'Ulysses' was no sooner published than banned in both England and America.
But it kept selling – and continues to sell boundless copies today.
Academic, literary historian, and compelling storyteller, Marco Sonzogni tells the fascinating story of how one of the most sprawling and, arguably, the greatest piece of literature in the twentieth century, saw the light of day – and reveals an intriguing Aotearoa New Zealand connection.
