In the 1990s, Ross Calman (Ngāti Toa, Ngāi Tahu) stumbled on a manuscript: a handwritten biography of his ancestor Te Rauparaha, written in te reo by the great chief’s son. Ross mastered te reo, and now, decades later, has translated and published the manuscript – complete with eyewitness accounts and ancient curses. He and Dr Te Maire Tau (Upoko of Ngāi Tūāhuriri) discuss these turbulent times between Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Toa, and the peace marriages that followed. With Michael Stevens chairing and taonga puoro accompaniment from Ariana Tikao.

With support from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
