Yokai Talk 5 Dan Taipua - My Favourite Monsters: Yokai in Toys, Games and Cartoons

Yokai are the folk monsters of Japan: spooky, mysterious and old. But for as long as yokai have been talked about, they have also been a source of fun, adventure and even entertainment for adults and children alike.

Join writer and critic Dan Taipua in a family-friendly talk about the monsters you may already know, from the popular worlds of Pokémon, Studio Ghibli, Yo-Kai Watch and more. Dan will also bring along some yokai from his own collection to show-and-tell.

This talk will include a take home activity sheet and extra information about the fun world of yokai.

About the speaker:
Dan Taipua (Waikato-Tainui) is a writer and critic working in Tāmaki Makaurau. He has published works for Radio New Zealand, Metro Magazine, The Spinoff, Flicks.co.nz and has appeared as a commenter on TVNZ1, Three and Māori Television.

He has a range of interests that cross through art history, popular culture and Te Ao Māori with a particular focus on futurism and imagined worlds. His interest in Japan springs from a childhood student exchange and continues through ongoing study and visits to the country.
