Parihaka Day falls on a Sunday this year and NMKŌ is partnering with the great folk at St Mary the Virgin Anglican Church in Church Square, Addington to bring a special commemorative event. This will be an Anglican church service with Parihaka waiata, karakia, readings and history-telling.

At 10.30am on 5 November a commemorative church service will be held at St Mary followed by a silent walk to old Addington Prison for karakia and laying of flowers. Refreshments will then be served at the church.

The prison site is no longer operational (closed 1999; now Jailhouse Backpackers) but still has real significance in the Parihaka story as it's the place Parihaka leaders Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi were interned after their unlawful arrest at the invasion of Parihaka in 1881 by Crown troops and armed constabulary. Visit our Parihaka FB page for further details, read more at https://nvdatabase.swarthmore.edu/content/maori-resistance-british-land-seizure-parihaka-new-zealand-1879-81, or view www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-FsfNCaNYM

Later in the day, at 2.30pm a silent hikoi will begin at Lyttleton Rose Garden (old Lyttleton gaol) and this *pilgrimage walk from the will go around the coastal track to Rāpaki and the Parihaka Memorial At 5pm a memorial service will be held at Rāpaki Church and karakia at the Parihaka Memorial, followed by light refreshments.

*Updates and wet weather notifications will be posted on the Parihaka Network Christchurch FB and Instagram.
