This Abstract Painting Course invites you to break away from painting the visual reality of life. Abstract art: what is it and how do you do it? That is what this course will teach you. Abstract art can be described as any form of painting that does not try to portray reality. Many abstract artists enjoy the process just as much as the finished results. In this course we’ll explore colours, different forms, and gestural marks using special technique, so you achieve your expectations.

The introduction to this abstract course will give some background on where abstract concepts originated and how it blossomed in the 1950s. Then you will embark on the journey of discovery, applying some of the techniques first employed by the artists from the New York Abstract Expressionists. Particularly colour field painting and carefully looking at colour, how it applies and works.

Once you’ve got this concept, we will look at contemporary artists and what they are doing in this genre. Learn colour glazing with multiple layers of thin colour. You’ll learn the differences between direct and indirect painting and how they combine to create distinct effects in abstract. We will use images from nature and learn how to use them to start an abstract artwork, using modelling paste to increase textures to increase impact.
