We are pleased to offer a special jewellery and adornment-making workshop with Neke Moa (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Ahuriri, Ngāti Porou, Tūwharetoa Ngāti Matepū, Ngāi Tū, and Ngāti Whakāri). Neke has an unique Māori adornment and sculptural practice. Her pieces drawing heavily on materials found in, or given to her by, te taiao (the environment). Between 2016 and 2020, Neke taught shell craft in Fiji and Tonga. She continues to teach and learn as part of her art practice, which centres on mātauranga Māori, hauora, connectedness, and materiality.
Neke is working as Matariki Artist in Residence at Oxford Gallery through July and offers this workshop as part of her residency.
In this workshop led by Neke, you will be making tohu (marks) on surfaces and harnessing the creative potential of natural, found materials, such as stone and harakeke, to make wearable adornments (think necklaces, brooches and earrings).
It will be an exploration of creativity and, in Neke’s words, ‘It should be relaxing!’.
All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring along something that you are working on, to add to and develop.
Please wear warm clothing that you are not precious about; there will be some working outside and we will be making mess!
Suitable for adults and some older tamariki / rangatahi (15+ yrs) who can work independently.
