Spend the first class learning to construct simple basket settings to support faceted stones, and the second class setting them!

This class is only open to intermediate (at least two 8 wk block classes or equivalent) or advanced students who are competant soldering alone. It is a technique + booster class where tuition time is for the first three hours and then students are welcome to stay on till 4pm to practice and keep working on their settings.
Please note this is untutored time and we strongly recommend students take advantage of it. If you have a studio setup at home you can of course finish working on your setting there.

We have split this workshop into two days so students don't become fatigued and frustrated by the tricky soldering and delicate setting.

Day one is spent gaining an understanding of how faceted stones sit in your setting, how to construct a simple basket setting in copper or brass. The focus will be on making the settings rather than constructing whole pieces of jewellery, with attention to soldering setups and preparation of the joints. Students will be issued with suitable sterling silver to craft a silver setting as well if they wish, or they can use this at a later time.
We will be starting with round or oval stones, 8 - 10mm in size. If you have your own stones in these shapes and sizes please feel free to bring them.

Day two is learning to set up your basket for setting a stone, how to shape your claws and push them over the stone to make it secure. We will also cover the basics of cleaning up around these settings. Again, students are welcome to stay on until 4pm to finish their setting.

Included in the class fee are copper and brass for practising on, up to 6 grams of sterling silver, two faceted CZs and all consumables such as sandpaper, solder and chemicals. Extra metals are available for purchase in the studio.
Please note that magnification is required for checking your settings. We do have magnifying glasses in the studio but if you have your own it is best to bring them. It is also recommended that you bring your own needle files and pliers if you have them.
