Debussy - La Mer
For the shock of the wind and the waves, and the smack of salt spray, look no further than Debussy’s La Mer.
The Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa was inspired by the water cycle (‘mist rising from the sea, clouds forming, rain falling down to earth’) but saw it as a metaphor for ‘the cycle of human life, of our attachment to nature, of our striving for emptiness, removal of boundaries and perfection’.
Annelien Van Wauwe plays Mozart’s golden concerto on the basset clarinet, the historic, less-often heard type of clarinet for which he originally wrote it.
