Astro Photography Workshop – Muriwai Beach
Astrophotography has become very popular and is very addictive. It is also one of the most challenging forms of photography and requires a lot of forward planning and patience. This workshop will show you the basics of planning a Milky Way shoot, what to look for, when the best times to go are, where to go, how to set up the camera and lens (and which lens should I use) . A later workshop to show some simple ways to process the captured data in Lightroom and Photoshop will cover single exposures and stitched panoramas for those a bit more adventurous. To help everyone get the most out of this opportunity here are some points to consider.
- Camera, like the Canon EOS R5, R6 Mark II and R8 mirrorless camera which has the ability to use an ISO of at least 3200.
- Lenses, A wide fast lens is ideal, (RF 15-35mm f/2.8 or EF 16-35mm f/2.8 ) but even a cheap standard 50mm lens will work.
- Tripod, A good quality sturdy tripod ideally with a ballhead is a must to allow 20 second exposures.
- remote trigger if you have one,
- a torch (although we try to restrict the use of torches at the shooting location) ideally just a torch just bright enough to see what you are doing on location, but also one bright enough if we go to the beach. I know that red lights help with night vision, but they are a pain when doing astrophotography so dull small torches are better.
- Transport, own transport required, but some car-pooling would be possible to get to the location
- Warm layered clothing with wind breaker, hat, scarf, closed in shoes and gloves.
- I would recommend looking at an App like PhotoPills or Planit as a useful investment for planning night-time photography. They have moon phases, Milky Way positions at different times, and the incredible Night AR mode where you can plan how the Milky Way will look at your current location at any time in the future.
- Make sure the camera batteries are all fully charged, that you have a working SD card, the shoe for the tripod is on the camera and fits the tripod you are using,
- Please know how to set your camera in full manual mode without having to keep using a torch.

This hands-on workshop involves walking down to Maori Bay, suitable for participants with a moderate level of fitness. You should be comfortable walking on slightly uneven terrain for short durations.
