In a few weeks, Muslims around the world will be celebrating Eid al-Fitr, an important holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn until dusk each day. The celebration of Eid al-Fitr is a time for joy, thanksgiving and feasting with family and friends.

Asturlab Cultural Centre and Christchurch City Council are thrilled to announce the second ever outdoor Eid al-Fitr festival in Central City, Christchurch. After the success of last year's Eid al-Fitr festival at “The Commons” on Kilmore St., which drew in around 3,500 attendees, this year's event is moving to a larger location at the “Hagley Park Entertainment Triangle” and is set to accommodate over 10,000 people. Our free-entry, family-friendly event welcomes people from all backgrounds to come together and celebrate this beloved, traditional Muslim festival.

Entertainment will include an MC to host the event; plenty of vendors selling a range of ethnic foods including the much anticipated traditional shawarma and desserts; stalls selling ethnic wares; a henna stall; exhibitions of Muslim community initiatives; free cups of traditional hot tea and delicious dates as long as supplies last and traditional Muslim nasheed will be performed live on stage by a local band.

In addition, the festival will feature a dedicated tent for women and children only and designated areas set aside for prayer times. Kids will also have plenty of free activities to choose from, including goodie bags, face painting, giant games, bouncy castles, popcorn, and cotton candy.

Parking will be available, and some vendors will have Eftpos, but it is still advisable to also bring cash.

As a sign of respect, all festival goers are encouraged to dress modestly for this event.

We would be honoured if you would join us in celebrating this special occasion with all of Christchurch.
