Onehunga Fencible & Historical Society (est 1974) as part of the 2023 Auckland Council Heritage Festival over the upcoming school holidays, is proud to present a FREE talk and walk starting from the Jellicoe Park Blockhouse, on the area's 'most researched' lady, Elizabeth Yates whom 130 years ago, despite many obstacles and protest, managed to win a council election and be mayor for a year.

Retired Sea Captain Michael Yates her husband, was also mayor for a number of years and is often not given the credit and acknowledgement he deserves on helping Elizabeth smash the glass ceiling. This lecture and walk will have a brief exhibition of Yates photographs over 130 plus years and will have an hour-long talk about the couple, followed by under an hour-long walk through Onehunga, highlighting landmarks and places they frequented in their time in the town.

This year marks 130 years since women got the vote in New Zealand, 130 years since Elizabeth Yates became lady mayor and JP of Onehunga and 30 years since Auckland City Council and OFHS organised a parade and festival in 1993 to honour and mark 100 years of women's right to vote. Donations appreciated.
