The popular Carols for Christmas concert this year has the addition of what characterises Christmas celebrations in many countries - children's voices.

To aid the choir and the audience in singing various popular carols, the choir has enlisted the help of 23 young singers who have been rehearsing regularly with Nigel Tongs on Saturday mornings. In addition, Music Director, Christine Archer-Lockwood has found a handful of student guest choristers to boost the melody lines and help the audience with their singing of melodies and choruses. Guy Donaldson on piano and Roy Tankersley on organ will add their talents to the occasion - some of the chosen pieces showcase the accompanists.

In the northern hemisphere, the picture of children carolling is a common one. Churches there often have their choirs of children - John Lennon and Paul McCartney were church child choristers. To sing outside, children would be bundled up with warm hats, scarves and gloves. No doubt cellphone torches will have replaced the lanterns used to help singing carols in the winter darkness, carrying on a tradition that is not so prevalent these days in bright sunny New Zealand evenings.

The Renaissance Singers and extended company are providing an opportunity for those who like listening to and/or singing carols to do so. In addition, the choir will be doing what it is expected of them, singing some gorgeous and interesting carols that are a little less familiar. The choir has been learning how to pronounce Spanish in order to present two songs that are very popular in Spanish speaking countries.

The choir also sings a carol that muses on the holiday season and the gathering of family and friends. While the various video calling apps enable get-togethers, it is a poor substitute for round the piano carol singing. Centuries ago, Christmases were also known for the opportunity to sing and dance, and the choir celebrates that with a catchy version of Tomorrow shall be my dancing day.

The more familiar Silent Night, Away in a Manger and Good King Wenceslas will no doubt lead to some hearty singing and fond memories. Tickets will be available from the choristers and at the door where there will be cash sales and the opportunity to pay by bank transfer.
