Chip carving is an ancient art form that has been evident throughout the world from China to the Islamic world and medieval Europe as well as in the pacific islands. It is commonly seen in northern European countries to decorate furniture and household items. Wanda often uses chip carving in her work to reference the divine patterns and order in nature.
In this workshop you will be creating a 2-dimensional chip carved bird that can be used as a candle holder. The chip carving will introduce the basic methods and patterns of geometric chip carving which involve cutting out small triangles to create patterns. There will be an opportunity for participants to modify the carved design if they wish or follow a template. We will be carving Jelutong timber and using small chip carving knives.
