Clevedon Art Trail - Open Studio Weekend 2023

With summertime fast approaching it means that the Annual Clevedon Art Trail - Open Studio Event is just around the corner too. The Artists, Creators and Makers in Clevedon have been busy creating artworks and getting ready for this popular annual event, now in its seventh year, happening on Auckland Anniversary Weekend the 28th, 29th and 30th of January 2023.

The Clevedon Art Trail is a self drive exploration of authentic rural New Zealand right on Auckland’s southern doorstep. Thirty five minutes from the city, the event features Open Studio’s, free live Artist demonstrations, interactive workshops and exhibitions all within a short distance of each other in Clevedon.

You could start the trail by pulling into Art industry, James and Cheryl Wright’s gallery showcases the unique work of 30 established and emerging artists. The next stop could be a short walk up the road to the Clevedon Creatives + Co where you will find their gallery filled with work by local and New Zealand Artists. Over the weekend Live demonstrations will be happening by Artists Cathy Cowin and Elizabeth-jane.

Next you could walk along to see Gracie Matthews, Costumier at the Clevedon District Centre. During the weekend she will have her vintage hand cranks available for you to have a go with.

Just out of the village is McNicol homestead, it is the meeting place of the Clevedon Art Group, here for a small donation to McNicol homestead you can see the Art group and their works and take in the historical building around you. Just along the Clevedon-Kawakawa Road, is the home studio of local artist Helen Morrison where you can see her current work of expressionist landscape paintings.

Carry along back into the village and out along North road where you will find the Gallery and studio of Katie Blundell Artist. See her contemporary artwork and creative space. This year Katie is offering a free Animal Drawing session for kids and adults, Monday 10am, to register for this please email katieblundellartist@gmail.com

In the same driveway you will find Riverhaven Artland. See the small works sculpture exhibition and walk the 40 acre sculpture Park over this special event weekend, guided by the trail map or by daily guided tours. For the Fourth year in a row, Franklin hospice is the chosen charity for Riverhaven Artland Summer Sculpture weekend, ticket sales and 25% of money raised from the sale of artwork will go to support Franklin Hospice.
If you happen to be doing the trail on the Sunday, check out Pop-Up Printmaking with Toni Mosley, who will be at the Clevedon Farmer’s Market between 10- 12pm, where you can make a monoprint to take home with you for free.
