Te Uru

Join us on Saturday 9 December from 4-6pm to welcome for new exhibitions to Te Uru: Bill Culbert Blue Cloud, Green Waterfall, Hiria Anderson kuhu mai, Laura Williams Settle Petal, and Alan Ibell Exterior (with Buried Keepsakes).

Blue Cloud, Green Waterfall brings together a selection of works by esteemed New Zealand artist Bill Culbert made between 1974 and 2012, including painting, drawing, photography, engraving, assemblage and holography.

kuhu mai gathers a selection of paintings by Hiria Anderson-Mita (Rereahu, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Apakura) that focus on spaces and scenarios unoccupied by human figures. The presence of bodies is, rather, implied—by unworn jandals in a doorway, an unattended glass of wine, or food preparation underway.

Settle Petal celebrates the floral imagery central to the work of Tāmaki Makaurau based painter Laura Williams. Flowers bloom throughout Williams’ intricately painted scenes, communicating sentiments ranging from the historical to the deeply personal.

Alan Ibell’s diorama-like installation Exterior (with Buried Keepsakes) in Te Uru’s window space takes its inspiration from an earlier painting by the artist, House at Night (2020) and marks Ibell’s first move into three-dimensionality.

These exhibitions have been generously supported by Fox Jensen McCrory, the Bill and Pip Culbert Estate and Page Galleries.

Join us for a glass of Everyday Wine or a Hallertau pilsner and some delicious Florets focaccia served with artisanal preserves from the Modern Preserver.
