Balfolk Aotearoa/NZ is thrilled to announce a special weekend of dance that will undoubtedly make Wellingtonians dance enthusiasts and folk music aficionados fall in love with Balfolk.
Balfolk is a folk dance and music movement from Europe that gives new life to traditional dances, a modern way to dance to folk tunes. It has a friendly, social and energising atmosphere. Dances are simple and easy to learn but also have depth allowing for exploration and playful variations which makes it accessible to people with all skill levels.
The weekend will offer opportunities to learn the varied repertoire of Balfolk dances under the skilful guidance of Michael Parmenter & Kate Grace, Balfolk Aotearoa/NZ’s co-directors. It will conclude in a joyful celebration with a Folk Bal. Ahead of the launch of the new Wellington Branch, they will unleash their contagious passion and introduce you to the world of Mazurka, Skottishe, Chapelloise and Bourrée.
Workshop schedule, Innermost Gardens, Mt Victoria
Saturday 07 Oct, 10am to 12pm
In Workshop 1, we will learn about the main repertoire with some of the classic and simple Balfolk group dances
Saturday 07 Oct, 1pm to 3pm
In workshop 2, we will explore more complex group dances.
Sunday 08 Oct, 11am to 1pm
In workshop 3, we will focus on partner dances. No partner needed.
Folk Bal schedule: Sat 07 Oct Thistle Hall, Te Aro
6:30 to 7:15: introductory workshop
7:30 to 10pm: Bal!
Location, access and parking:
Workshops are held at Innermost Gardens, 31 Lawson place, Mt Victoria, indoor, in their Hall but surrounded by peaceful nature.Bus 2 access. There is some parking by the Pirie Street Playground. Follow the path by the Bowling Club and you will see the Hall.
Folk Bal on Saturday evening is held at Thistle Hall, 293 Cuba Street, Te Aro
