Examining the histories of Māori and Pākehā representation, Ayesha Green: Folk Nationalism interrogates the way power is upheld by images. Through subtle acts of mirroring and repositioning, Green refracts the often simplified way that images from our visual history have been read, and the truth claims they make, to demonstrate how numerous, diverse and contradictory meanings converge within them.

Folk Nationalism and other stories, a new reader published on the occasion of this exhibition at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi, reflects these diverse and contradictory meanings. The book presents new writing by authors from across Aotearoa who have been invited by Green to respond to her work and the ideas and themes they contain. These contributors include Francis McWhannell, Lachlan Taylor, Sarah Hudson, Matariki Williams, Elle Loui August, Hanahiva Rose, Jess Nicholson, Moewai Marsh and Madison Kelly.

We are delighted to present an opportunity to hear the artist and some of the contributing authors in conversation. Join us with Ayesha Green and writers Elle Loui August and Matariki Williams.

Ayesha Green: Folk Nationalism will be open to view during the event and a cash bar will be available throughout.
